Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate knowledge of hospice and attitude of care for dying patients in university students. Methods: The study subjects were 277 university students consisted of 85 nursing students, 92 medical students and 100 general students at D city from March 22nd to 31st, 2012. Results: Percentage of correct answer of PCQN were nursing students 59.4%, medical students 62.6%, and general students 53.1%. The item of the highest score was ¡®It is crucial for family members to remain at the bedside until death occurs¡¯. The items of the lowest score were¡®During the last days of life, drowsiness associated with electrolyte imbalance may decrease the need for sedation¡¯in nursing students and medical students,¡®Drug addiction is a major problem when morphine is used on a long term basis for the management of pain¡¯ in general students. Mean score of the attitude of care for dying patients was 2.57 in nursing students, 2.47 in medical students, and 2.40 in general students. The items with the highest percentage of correct responses were¡®Nursing should permit dying persons to have flexible visiting schedules¡¯in nursing students,¡®Giving nursing care to the dying person is a worthwhile learning experience¡¯in medical students,¡®Families need emotional support to accept the behavior changes of the dying person¡¯in general students. The item with the lowest percentage of correct responses was¡®Addition to pain relieving medication should be a nursing concern when dealing with a dying person¡¯in all students. Conclusion: In conclusion, it appears that the ratio of University students who are going to take the hospice service was not high although students agreed with the needs of hospice care. Systematic education about hospice would be required to improve the current condition. Additionally, it should be considered for students to be educated hospice education including pain and symptom management.
